
Spring/Summer Programs at the Heritage Museum
The Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida announces its new History Rocks! spring/summer program series for kids. These terrific programs will engage kids by utilizing authentic historic museum collections and hands-on activities sure to entertain and educate – from genealogy and archaeology to pioneer life and World War II history. WWII Kids (grades 1-5)
Can you imagine standing in line for hours to buy 1 piece of bubblegum? While American soldiers were fighting overseas, kids were busy collecting scrap metal and rubber, as well as stacks of old newspapers and magazines for recycling. Find out what life was like for kids during World War II and how they helped to make history.

Gadget Gurus (grades 1-5)
So You Want to Be An Inventor? Are you a kid who likes to tinker with machines that clink and clank, levers that pull, bells that ring, cogs that grind, switches that turn on and off, wires that vibrate, dials that spin? You may be inspired by inventors in history who have accomplished great things. Join us for a day of exploration and discovery!

Cracker Shack (grades 1-5)
Many early settlers in Florida grew up in log cabins, cracker shacks and shotgun houses. Learn about different homes from Florida’s past with this entertaining, hands-on lesson in Panhandle architectural history. Then build your own pioneer house the way Florida settlers did in the 1800s.. Will yours stay standing?

Time Travelers (grades 1-5)
If you could travel through time, where would you go? Decide what year and what place you would love to visit as a time traveler. Who would you like to see? If you could ask them one question, what would it be? Let’s go time travelling and don’t forget your passport!

Carver-Hill Museum President Shannon Hayes Talk
Shannon Hayes, President of the Carver-Hill Museum in Crestview, will speak at the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida on Thursday, September 9 at 12 p.m. Hayes will share information about the museum, its history and historic collections. Carver-Hill Museum, site of the last segregated school in Okaloosa County, is the county’s exclusive repository for black history artifacts, collections and memorabilia.
Bring a sack lunch and come to the Heritage Museum for History Sandwiched-In, an informal, lunchtime educational program. This lecture is free and open to the public.
